IQ Test Questions with Answers

IQ tests mostly use four kinds of questions: matrix puzzles, number series, figure series and odd-one-out problems. Below are 8 free practice questions, each with the correct answer and a short explanation. They aren’t part of the real test, so practising here won’t spoil your score.

  1. Question 1: Which figure completes the pattern?

    Show the answer

Answer: F. Every column keeps the same shape and every row keeps the same fill. The last row is striped and the last column is triangles, so the answer is a striped triangle.

  2. Question 2: Which figure completes the pattern?

    Show the answer

Answer: B. Each row contains a star, a hexagon and a diamond once, and the number of shapes matches the row: one, two, three. The missing cell needs three hexagons.

  3. Question 3: Which number comes next?

    5102040?
    1. 80
    2. 45
    3. 50
    4. 60
    5. 100
    Show the answer

Answer: A. Each number is double the one before it: 40 × 2 = 80.

  4. Question 4: Which number comes next?

    124711?
    1. 15
    2. 14
    3. 22
    4. 17
    5. 16
    Show the answer

    Answer: E. The gaps grow by one each time: +1, +2, +3, +4, so the next step is +5. 11 + 5 = 16.

  5. Question 5: Which number comes next?

    812793?
    1. 2
    2. 6
    3. 9
    4. 0
    5. 1
    Show the answer

    Answer: E. Each number is divided by 3: 3 ÷ 3 = 1.

  6. Question 6: Which figure comes next?

    Show the answer

Answer: D. The arrow turns 90° clockwise at every step. After pointing left, it points up again.

  7. Question 7: Which figure comes next?

    Show the answer

Answer: B. One more circle is added each time and the fill alternates between solid and empty. The fifth figure has five solid circles.

  8. Question 8: Which figure is the odd one out?

    Show the answer

Answer: C. Every figure has three shapes except one, which has only two stars.

How can you get better at IQ questions?

  • Look for one rule at a time: shape, number, fill, then rotation.
  • Check rows and columns separately in matrix puzzles.
  • In number series, write down the gap between each pair of numbers.
  • Don’t get stuck. Skip and come back with fresh eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real IQ test questions?

They’re the same types of questions used in the CheckIQ test and in many well-known IQ tests, but they aren’t part of the scored test.

Can practice raise my IQ score?

Getting used to the question types can raise a test score a little, mostly because you’re less surprised. It doesn’t change your underlying ability much.
